was submitted by John O'Neill (kiwijohn@igrin.co.nz) on Thu Jun 7 19:20:26 EST 2001 Where are you From: NZ latterly comments: comments:Like it a lot and find it very helpful. I have some trouble deciding if Northland New Zealand is subtropical or warm-temperate. No doubt I'll find out in time. John Jeavons' book "The sustainable Vegetable garden" is my guide at the moment, basically because he is not afraid to use the dread word "calories" as his objective in vegetable growing and suggests the easiest crops to sustain us. Pity he works out of California and in lbs and inches. Good luck with your efforts. John

It offers hope to me, a phytocidal maniac. I could probably even get enthused about gardening except I have this problem - POSSUMS. I tried putting up a chicken wire fence but they just seem to scale that. I even put small plastic mesh tubes around my plants, and they climb into the tubes and chomp everything to the ground. I tried growing things in pots on my verandah - they come down and eat it (they must like me alot!) Now, I know you're not supposed to do anything nasty to our poor little ol' native animals, but I am sorely tempted. Any clues on what I can do?

To get new tomato plants simply break off suckers from parent plant. pot them up to thier first 2 leaves in a rich planting medium. Put them in partial shade for 1 week, keep well watered. plants will start to root in 2 weeks. This allows you to start fewer plants over the winter months.
